Veiga, Ana Carolina Pires; Universidade Estadual Paulista “Julio de Mesquita Filho”; Laurentis, Valéria Lucas de; Universidade Estadual Paulista “Julio de Mesquita Filho”; Vacari, Alessandra Marieli; Universidade Estadual Paulista “Julio de Mesquita Filho”; Volpe, Haroldo Xavier Linhares; Universidade Estadual Paulista “Julio de Mesquita Filho”; Ramalho, Dagmara Gomes; Universidade de São Paulo; De Bortoli, Sergio Antonio; Universidade Estadual Paulista “Julio de Mesquita Filho”.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the functional response of Orius insidiosus preying on the third and fourth instars of Aphis gossypii nymphs that were reared on transgenic NuOPAL (Bollgard I Event 531) and conventional Buriti cotton varieties. Fifty O. insidiosus female bugs aged 12–24h were distributed into five different Petri dishes with different densities of A. gossypii (2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 nymphs per plate) for each cotton variety. The number of prey consumed was evaluated over the course of 12h, with a final assessment at 24h. The handling times (Th) and attack rates (a) were 0.0697h and 1.1862h-1, respectively, for the Buriti variety and 0.0713h and 0.3030h-1, respectively, for the NuOPAL variety. The average number of prey consumed by...

Cultivar-specific and ulvan-induced resistance of apple plants to Glomerella leaf spot are associated with enhanced activity of peroxidases - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v35i3.16174 Agronomy
Araujo, Leonardo; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina; Stadnik, Marciel João; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina.
Glomerella leaf spot (GLS) is an important disease of apple plants, and the use of the algal polysaccharide ulvan represents a new technology for its control. This study aimed to verify whether the defense mechanisms involved in cultivar-specific and ulvan-induced plant resistance to GLS are associated with changes in the activities of peroxidase and β-1,3-glucanase. Seedlings were first sprayed with ulvan or water and then inoculated with Colletotrichum gloeosporioides [W1] 6 days later. The disease severity was recorded daily on both young and old leaves up to 10 days after inoculation, and the enzyme activities were monitored from 24 to 72h after inoculation (HAI). Although the young leaves were more susceptible to GLS, ulvan reduced approximately 66%...

Lethal and sublethal effects of neem on Aphis gossypii and Cycloneda sanguinea in watermelon Agronomy
Souza, Cíntia Ribeiro; Sarmento, Renato Almeida; Venzon, Madelaine; dos Santos, Gil Rodrigues; Silveira, Marcela Cristina Agustini C. da; Tschoeke, Paulo Henrique.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of oil extract of neem, Azadirachta indica, on the watermelon aphid Aphis gossypii and its natural enemy Cycloneda sanguinea. Toxicity bioassays were conducted with the commercial product DalNeem (1,475 g L-1 azadirachtin) at 0.0037 µg a.i. mL-1, 0.0074 µg a.i. mL-1 and 0.0148 µg a.i. mL-1, Malathion at 1 µg a.i. mL-1 and distilled water as a control treatment. The products were sprayed to watermelon leaf discs, and the insects were exposed to the product residues. The instantaneous population growth rate of A. gossypii and the survival of C. sanguinea larvae exposed to the different treatments were calculated. A decrease in the instantaneous population growth rate of A. gossypii with increasing...

Modeling citrus huanglongbing data using a zero-inflated negative binomial distribution Agronomy
Almeida, Eudmar Paiva de; Janeiro, Vanderly; Guedes, Terezinha Aparecida; Mulati, Fabio; Carneiro, José Walter Pedroza; Nunes, Willian Mario de Carvalho.
Zero-inflated data from field experiments can be problematic, as these data require the use of specific statistical models during the analysis process. This study utilized the zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) model with the log- and logistic-link functions to describe the incidence of plants with Huanglongbing (HLB, caused by Candidatus liberibacter spp.) in commercial citrus orchards in the Northwestern Parana State, Brazil. Each orchard was evaluated at different times. The ZINB model with random effects in both link functions provided the best fit, as the inclusion of these effects accounted for variations between orchards and the numbers of diseased plants. The results of this model show that older plants exhibit a lower probability of acquiring...

Modeling the incidence of citrus canker in leaves of the sweet orange variety ‘Pera’ Agronomy
Pompeu, Danielle da Silva; Guedes, Terezinha Aparecida; Janeiro, Vanderly; Gonçalves-Zuliane, Aline Maria Orbolato; Nunes, William Mario de Carvalho; Carneiro, José Walter Pedroza.
Citrus canker, caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri, is one of the most important diseases of citrus. The use of resistant genotypes plays an important role in the management and control of the disease and is the most environmentally sustainable approach to disease control. Citrus canker incidence was recorded in an experiment on nine genotypes of the sweet orange variety ‘Pera’ grafted on four rootstocks. The experiment was started in 2010 and the incidence of citrus canker on the leaves was recorded on a quarterly basis. The incidence data from the experiment were analyzed using a zero-inflated Beta regression model (RBIZ), which is the appropriate method to describe data with large numbers of zeros. Based on the residual analysis, the...
